Redundancy payments: claims & practitioner returns

Entitlement evidence, employee applications and the practitioner’s separate verification work.

England & Wales3 min readReviewed 26 Oct 2026

Government insolvency payments cover specified employment debts subject to statutory conditions and limits. An employee’s application and the practitioner’s return are different parts of the process. Accurate records are essential: a submitted figure is not by itself proof of entitlement.

Check the underlying records

Collect the employment contract, payroll history, actual payments, service dates and holiday records. Reconcile the amount claimed with what was earned and paid, including the relevant periods and any earlier insolvency event.

Check variable pay and director or connected-person claims on the evidence. A director is not automatically an employee, and a shareholding is not automatically a reason to reject an otherwise established entitlement.

Separate the employee and office-holder steps

The official payment route identifies how the case is registered, how the employee applies and what information the office-holder must supply. Use current forms and instructions for the correct jurisdiction.

Different categories of payment may require separate information and may be claimed at different stages. Explain what remains outstanding without promising a payment or timing that the practitioner does not control.

  • Verify the dismissal, insolvency and relevant claim dates.
  • Reconcile gross entitlement, deductions and payments already received.
  • Record corrections promptly and keep the supporting calculation.

Explain limits and remaining debt

The statutory payment scheme does not insure every employment loss. Applicable weekly limits, covered periods, eligibility conditions and treatment of benefits need current official guidance. Any balance against the employer requires a separate assessment of proof and priority.

Notice compensation, protective awards and pension contributions should not be treated as ordinary unpaid wages by default. Record any payment and resulting rights accurately so the estate and employee claims remain consistent.

England and Wales: source route

Use the Insolvency Service’s Great Britain case set-up guidance. The practitioner obtains the CN reference and supplies the required RP14/RP14A information; employees use the relevant RP1/RP2 claim routes. Dear IP records a revised RP14 declaration effective from 18 May 2026, reinforcing the need for evidence and corrections.
